Living in La Fortuna, Costa Rica means waking up every day to the sounds of the rainforest, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, and the stunning view of the Arenal Volcano.

I work in a local hostel, and every day I see travelers from all over the world arrive amazed by this small town, without realizing how much magic is hidden here.

That’s why I want to share —as someone who lives here— what makes La Fortuna such a special destination, and how you can make the most of your visit.

🌿 Where Is La Fortuna and Why Everyone Falls in Love with It

La Fortuna is located in northern Costa Rica, in the province of Alajuela, about three hours from San José. It’s one of the most visited destinations in the country thanks to its stunning mix of volcanoes, rainforest, rivers, and natural hot springs.

Here you can truly feel the Pura Vida lifestyle — peace, vibrant nature, and an energy that makes you want to stay longer than planned.

The undeniable star of the landscape is the Arenal Volcano, a perfectly shaped cone surrounded by lush forest and scenic trails. Even though its activity has decreased, it remains the symbol of La Fortuna and one of the most photographed volcanoes in Latin America.

🏞️ Things to Do in La Fortuna: Must-See Attractions

One of the things I love most about living here is that there’s something for every kind of traveler — adventure seekers, families, couples, or those looking to relax.

1. La Fortuna Waterfall

Just 10 minutes from downtown, this 70-meter waterfall plunges between green canyon walls into a blue pool perfect for swimming. It’s a magical spot and one of the must-visit places in La Fortuna.

2. Arenal Volcano National Park

Perfect for hiking lovers. There are several trails with viewpoints, solidified lava fields, and a breathtaking view of the volcano and Lake Arenal.

3. Natural Hot Springs

Thanks to volcanic activity, La Fortuna has some of the best hot springs in Costa Rica. There are options for all budgets — from free rivers to resorts with pools, spas, and restaurants.

4. Mistico Hanging Bridges Park

Walking above the rainforest canopy on hanging bridges is an unforgettable experience. Here you can spot toucans, monkeys, and colorful frogs.

5. Extreme Adventures

If you love adrenaline, La Fortuna is your playground — ziplining, whitewater rafting, waterfall rappelling, ATV tours, or tubing down the Arenal River.

☕ Where to Eat in La Fortuna

One of the most pleasant surprises about living here is the variety of charming local restaurants and cafés. Some of my top recommendations are:

  • Soda Viquez – delicious traditional Costa Rican food, generous portions, and great prices.

  • Organico Fortuna – perfect for healthy and vegetarian options.

  • Red Frog Coffee Roaster – amazing local coffee and a cozy vibe.

  • La Parada – great for a quick and tasty local meal in the center of town.

And if you love markets, the Local Market of La Fortuna is the perfect place to try tropical fruits, artisan cheese, and freshly baked bread.

🌧️ Weather and Best Time to Visit La Fortuna

The weather here is tropical all year round — warm, humid, and incredibly green. The dry season (December to April) is ideal for clear views and adventure tours. The green season (May to November) brings frequent showers, but also fewer tourists, lower prices, and more powerful waterfalls.

Personally, I love the rainy season — the forest feels alive, and sunsets after the rain are absolutely breathtaking.

🧭 Local Tips to Make the Most of Your Visit

After meeting thousands of travelers, these are the tips I always share:

  1. Stay at least 3 nights. There’s so much to do and see in La Fortuna that one day isn’t enough.

  2. Book local tours. Local guides know the stories, wildlife, and hidden spots you won’t find online.

  3. Walk and connect. People in La Fortuna are incredibly kind and always willing to help.

  4. Bring insect repellent, swimwear, and comfortable shoes. You’ll definitely need them.

  5. Support local businesses. Every soda, tour, and family-run hostel is part of the soul of this town.

💚 The Magic of La Fortuna

Living in La Fortuna has taught me that you don’t need to go far to feel connected with nature.Every rainfall, every sunrise with the volcano in the background, and every smile from a traveler or local reminds me that this place has something truly special.

When you arrive, don’t rush from one tour to another.Take a moment to breathe the fresh air, listen to the forest, and let yourself move at the peaceful rhythm of the town.

That’s the real Pura Vida.
