Traveling solo has always been both one of my greatest challenges and passions. This time, my destination was La Fortuna, Costa Rica, famous for the stunning Arenal Volcano, its hot springs, waterfalls, and lush rainforest. Since I work remotely, I needed a place where I could stay productive, feel safe, and at the same time connect with people and enjoy my journey. That’s how I found Río Danta Hostel.

Arriving at a local and family-run hostel in La Fortuna

The first thing I noticed was the perfect location: just a few minutes from downtown La Fortuna, yet far enough to feel surrounded by nature and tranquility. From the moment I arrived, I felt the warmth of a family-run hostel, so different from the impersonal hostels I had stayed in before.

The staff welcomed me kindly, explained the facilities, room options, and gave me helpful recommendations for activities in the area. As a solo female traveler, this was essential—I immediately felt safe and cared for, while still enjoying my independence.

Spaces for every type of traveler

During my stay, I got to see both the private rooms and the shared dorms. I chose to stay in a dorm because I wanted to meet other backpackers, but I noticed that private rooms are perfect for couples or families.

The dorms are well designed: each bed has its own reading lamp, power outlet, and personal space—perfect for someone like me who spends hours on the laptop. The air conditioning and daily cleaning made my stay comfortable, even on hot days.

The shared kitchen was another highlight. Fully equipped, it was always a place to meet new people, cook together, and share stories of our travels. It’s the kind of space where true hostel connections happen.

Remote work surrounded by nature

One of my main concerns was the internet connection, but the WiFi at Río Danta Hostel was excellent. I was able to work on video calls, upload files, and keep up with my projects without interruptions.

Sometimes I worked from the garden, enjoying birdsong and the fresh air—an incredible upgrade from any office space. This balance of remote work and travel was exactly what I had been looking for.

Exploring La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano

Thanks to the hostel, booking tours and activities was easy and reliable. I visited the La Fortuna Waterfall, hiked trails in the rainforest, relaxed in the famous hot springs, and even tried a thrilling zipline adventure with breathtaking views of Arenal Volcano.

The best part is that everything was arranged directly at the hostel, with trusted local operators. I felt that by staying at Río Danta Hostel, I was also supporting the local community.

What I loved most about Río Danta Hostel

  • The family atmosphere and warm hospitality.

  • The mix of travelers: backpackers, digital nomads, groups, and couples.

  • The location: close to downtown, but peaceful.

  • The common areas, perfect for socializing or simply reading a book.

  • The sense of safety, especially important as a solo female traveler.

A recommendation for fellow travelers

If you’re planning a trip to Costa Rica and wondering where to stay in La Fortuna, I highly recommend Río Danta Hostel. It’s the perfect combination of comfort, affordable prices, and authentic atmosphere, where you can both connect with people and enjoy your own space.

Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with a group, you’ll find an option that fits your needs. And if, like me, you’re working remotely, you’ll love the chance to stay productive while exploring one of the most beautiful areas in Costa Rica.

Final thoughts

My stay at Río Danta Hostel was much more than just accommodation—it was a true experience. I felt part of a community, surrounded by nature, and discovered the best of La Fortuna.

Traveling solo has never felt this safe and enriching. Costa Rica invites you to slow down, connect with nature, and live fully—and Río Danta Hostel is the perfect place to do just that.
